THE EARTH CAN STOP STOPPING AND REVERSE
According to the latest study in the journal Nature Geoscience, the Earth's inner core seems to have stopped rotating, maybe even reversed.
To calculate the core's rotational speed, two scientists Yi Yang and Xiaodong Song (Peking University) have studied seismic waves from earthquakes that have passed through the core inside the same path since the 1960s. However, an unexpected finding shows that, since 2019, the seismic wave data has changed very little, although before that it always changed over time. This shows that the inner core seems to have stopped spinning for the last decade and may turn back
The rotation of the inner core is controlled and balanced by the magnetic field generated in the outer core and a series of gravitational effects of the coating. Understanding how the inner core rotates helps shed light on how the layers interact as well as many other processes deep within the Earth.
Scientists Yang and Song argue based on their calculations that a small imbalance in the electromagnetic and gravitational forces could slow or even reverse the rotation of the inner core.
